Running Podcasts
Our resident writer ;) Hannah Irwin looks at a few of the many running-related podcasts out there, most of which have been set up this year. We will cover who they are, what aspects of running they look at, why they are different, and who might listen.
We even asked the hosts themselves a few questions. If you are a podcast listener, or even if you aren’t, and are looking for some running focused chat, here are a few podcasts we would recommend to you.
Keep Running with Rachel Stringer and Armana Rai
Whether you are an experienced runner, a newbie, or just enjoy listening to people’s running stories, this relatively new podcast is a great listen! Rachel Stringer, ex-international runner and broadcaster and Armana Rai, running influencer, instantly reel you in with their energy and positive chat. Within each podcast they talk to inspiring, real-life runners about their experiences, whilst drawing on their own ups and downs, to give you that extra bit of motivation for your next run. They kickstart each chat with a quick-fire round, asking each runner five all-important questions that you are desperate to know. This podcast is an easy listen, perfect for company on a run or when you are out and about.
What makes their podcast different to others?
It touches on big topics as well as light-hearted ones in a short space of time. If you want a podcast that gets to the point whilst also being filled with lots of chat, this is a fantastic listen. Unlike many other podcasts, it is a quick listen, ideal for fitting into your lunch break or whilst having breakfast.
Who is their target audience?
Anyone and everyone. This podcast educates and inspires all levels of runners. Whether you are interested in hearing other people’s stories or want some running guidance, this podcast is perfect for you!

A Runner’s Life
‘A Runner’s Life’ podcast is hosted by Marcus Brown, commonly known as Marathon Marcus. He is an athlete in his own right, a family man and a podcast owner! He not only interviews athletes about their journeys and achievements, but he also covers topics prevalent at the moment, offers training advice, such as for those looking to run a sub-3-hour marathon or those unsure how to fuel before a race. ‘A Runner’s Life’ focuses on anything and everything running related, whether it is racing, training, or how running impacts our daily lives- Marcus is sure to cover it all.
What makes your podcast different to others?
There are many podcasts out there, but there are hardly any that show and represent the voices of BIPOC in the running community. This is where my podcast is different. The concept of the podcast is to share the conversations that dedicated amateur runners have about life and running offline, but to share the lessons online. I wanted to share stories that I could relate to as a person with a full-time job with two kids, starting out as 4:55 marathoner whilst training for a sub 2:45 London championship qualifying space.
Who is your target audience?
The ethos of my podcast is to have a positive contribution for the running community. Whilst I want to encourage beginners, my primary audience are runners who are competitive, but not professional, the many, like myself who train and race in the pursuit of personal excellence. It’s about supporting the amateur athlete.

The Way of the Runner
‘The Way of the Runner’ is a yet another new podcast, which has only been live since January. Award-winning author, Adharanand Finn, who wrote Running with the Kenyans (2012), The Way of the Runner (2014), and The Rise of the Ultra Runner (2019), interviews an eclectic array of runners alongside his producer Dave Clarke, to try and find out what makes us get out of the door, day after day, to run lots of miles overtime. He has spoken to the likes of Chrissie Wellington, Beth Pascall and Zach Miller about their ultra-running adventures. The conversational tone of this podcast has the power to make you feel as though you are sitting live in their living room, so you become completely invested in what is being said. The literary style of the podcast makes it appealing to non-runners as well as runners. It’s ideal for anyone interested in sport.
What makes your podcast different to others?
My podcast is different because it's me asking the questions - as an author I think I come from a different perspective - inquisitive about the experience of running, the stories of people's lives, the gray areas ... rather than talking just about results, tactics, goals etc. You could say it's more of a literary approach to the subject of running.
Who is your target audience?
I think the target audience is runners, mostly, but anyone interested in human stories could listen to it - thoughtful people who run.

Bad Boy Running
No, it’s not what you think. The ‘Bad Boy Running’ Podcast isn’t just a podcast for boys to enjoy, it’s a great listen for girls too, I can vouch for that! It is the oldest of the podcasts we have looked at and is hosted by running journalists and bloggers, Jody Raynsford and David Hellard. It covers every topic you may (or may not) talk about in the pub, gym, car, or on a run! One thing this podcast definitely does do, is make you laugh. At times the humour can be relatively explicit and controversial, but this only adds to the light-hearted nature of the podcast! This podcast probably isn’t for you if you are easily offended or prone to overthinking. Raynsford and Hellard ramble and discuss all sorts of topics whilst interviewing different people about the running and non-running related aspects of their lives. If you are training for a marathon or anything longer (or just looking for something to listen to), this is perfect for you, as you’ll have finished running before they’ve stopped talking.
What makes your podcast different to others?
We had a review recently, describing our podcast as ‘the amazing world of running you didn’t know existed’. We are different to most podcasts as we’re the people you want to hang out with down the pub, not just run with.
Who is your target audience?
We target more of a personality of person rather than a demographic, probably best described as someone who is anything but boring.
